Rapid Prototyping

Catalog Description:

Utilizing modeling software and various rapid prototyping (RP)
systems, students will create a number of parts, assemblies and
engineering drawings.  Short run tooling techniques and investments casting will be explored.  Students will also investigate the advantages and disadvantages of current RP technologies.

Course Goals:

The course has three main areas of study: (1) converting design drawings and existing parts to electronic, 3 dimensional geometry files, (2) fabricate these parts using both additive and subtractive rapid prototyping systems, and (3) converting the RP models to low volume production parts using investment casting, and short run tooling techniques.

Objectives:

To exhibit proficiency in the fabrication of components using rapid prototyping system and matching design criteria to RP process capability each student will:

1. use a 3 dimensional software modeling package to construct simple geometric shapes.
2. combine simple shapes into complex configurations, and blend
